It’s been a while…
May 8, 2009Ok ok I know, I never said that I was good at this whole blogging thing! So sorry for anyone who actually follows this thing, I know I haven’t posted anything in a while. Life gets busy and frankly I didn’t have anything to say that I felt was worth someone else reading! haha
But anyway…you can call me lame, (and I wouldn’t care) but I have always had a soft spot for Incubus. You can call them “sell-outs” for the constant change in musical direction, but I’m afraid I would have to strongly disagree. Musicians as a rule are creative people, that find inspiration from the world around them to create songs. And while most musicians and bands stick to one genre – out of training, personal tastes, or to keep their fan base – it isn’t uncommon for musicians to get an itch to try something new. Most people don’t listen to only one type of music, so why should we expect our musicians to do the same? Often times this is what causes side projects and solo careers, but in the case of Incubus I applaud their ability to try new styles and sounds as a band, instead of individually. I think its more an artistic exploration and maturity (lets face it they were like 16 when their first album came out) that inspires their change in sound from album to album. If they were trying to chase down mainstream success then I think their albums wouldn’t sound the way they do – they would sound more like Fall Out Boy or the Jonas Brothers. (yeah you read that right. deal.) Here is the video for their new single “Black Heart Inertia.” Not sure if I love the video, but holy crap I’m convinced that Brandon Boyd doesn’t age! He looks younger than ever with that short hair!
